In honor of National Watermelon Day today I wanted to talk about all things WATERMELON! It’s no secret my family and I love this summer staple. So much so I’ve made a healthy No Bake Watermelon Cake for the kids and used watermelon as decor in my DIY Watermelon Flower Centerpiece.
How to Pick the Perfect Watermelon:
Look for the field spot
The yellow spot, known as the field spot is the place where the watermelon rested on the ground. Ripe watermelons have creamy yellow or even orange-yellow spots, not white.
Look for webbing
These weblike brown spots on the watermelon mean the bees touched the pollinating parts of the flower many times. The more pollination, the sweeter it is.
Boy and girl watermelons
Farmers differentiate this fruit by gender. For example “boy” watermelons are bigger and more elongated with a more watery taste. “Girl” watermelon have a rounded shape and are very sweet.
So here you go! Now you have all the information to pick the perfect watermelon.
