Dr. Thomasian’s Guide To Your Medicine Cabinet Essentials Checklist

I want to share with you my preferred checklist for what you should have in your medicine cabinet to treat minor ailments ―and to save yourself a late-night dash to the drugstore.

For Pain, Headaches, and Fevers

  • Aspirin
  • Acetaminophen (i.e. Tylenol)
  • Ibuprofen (i.e. Advil and Motrin)
  • Thermometer
    • parents for tylenol and ibuprofen make sure you have age appropriate medications for your little ones too

For Congestion, Colds, and Coughs

  • Cough medicine (i.e. Robitussin DM for adults, Zarbee’s cough syrup for kids)
  • Decongestant (i.e. Sudafed or Dristan)
  • Throat lozenges
  • Humidifier for kids with cough and congestion

For Allergies and Itching

  • Antihistamines (i.e. Benadryl) remember to purchase for your little ones too
  • Hyrodcortisone cream for persistent itching
  • Calamine lotion
  • Eye drops (i.e. Visine for allergies)

Digestive Issues

  • Antacids (i.e. TUMS)
  • Pepcid, Zyrtec (great for heartburn and allergic reactions!)
  • Antidiarrheal treatment (i.e. Pepto Bismol)

For Cuts and Burns

  • Bandaids of different sizes
  • Antiseptic for wound cleaning (i.e. hydrogen peroxide)
  • Antibiotic ointment (i.e. Neosporin) for preventing infections from wounds
  • Aloe vera gel
  • Cotton balls, pads, swabs


  • Sunscreen
  • Antifungal creams for athlete’s foot relief
  • Ice pack
  • Heat pad
