36 Things I Learned In 2018

4 Comments December 30, 2018 daintyhostess

As we say goodbye to 2018, I’m also closing the year with my 36th birthday. Yes I’m a Capricorn and because I’m born around the New Year, I get extra reflective in December because it marks a new year and new age for me.

Now that I’m 36 here are some lessons I’ve learned this year! Enjoy!

The other day I posted a photo of my younger daughter eating a 🥗 and someone responded to me “Why don’t you just let her be a kid???”
My response: Because she’s the kid and I’m the parent. I’m teaching my daughters how to treat their bodies’ well and that starts with understanding what foods are nutritious and make you feel good.
If I always gave in to every cupcake🧁, fries🍟, lollipop🍭, or hotdog 🌭 we passed just so they can achieve immediate satisfaction what does that do for them long term?
Long term we’re teaching our kids poor eating habits. Junk food is a reward for good behavior and that’s how they’ll always associate it for the rest of their lives.
.
BOTTOM LINE:Don’t feel bad serving your kids food they may not necessarily like. The key here is you’re introducing it to them and that’s the first step towards healthy eating habits. #americanheartmonth
Tagging some of my favorite dietitians for their input @mamadietitianluisa @saallenrd @veggiesandvirtue @kids.eat.in.color TIPS TO IMPROVE MEMORY 🧠! Whether you’re a student studying for exams👩🏼‍🏫, working professional interested in doing all you can to stay mentally sharp👩🏾‍⚕️, or a senior looking to preserve and enhance your grey matter as you age🧓🏻, there are lots of actions you can take to improve your memory and mental performance.
Our brains are surprisingly elastic and can reshape itself and its ability to process...
.
Here are 7️⃣ tips to create a sharper memory
.
1️⃣ Give your brain a workout: learning a new skill or challenging yourself to something you already know gives your brain a workout. Learning a new language🇫🇷, instrument🎹, or skill like photography 📸can all boost your brain power.
.
2️⃣ Don’t skip the physical exercise🚴🏼‍♀️: Exercise plays an important role in neuroplasticity by boosting growth factors and stimulating new neuronal connections. Aerobics is particularly good for the brain!
.
3️⃣ Make time for friends👯‍♂️: Healthy relationships are the ultimate brain boosters. Research shows that having meaningful friendships and a strong support system are vital not only to emotional health, but also to brain health.
.
4️⃣ Keep stress in check🤬: Chronic stress destroys brain cells and damages the hippocampus, the region of the brain involved in the formation of new memories and the retrieval of old ones. Studies have also linked stress to memory loss.
.
5️⃣ Eat a brain-boosting diet🥑: You all know how much I love my 🥑🥑🥑 and it’s for good reason. It’s loaded with healthy fats that support the brain. Other sources of healthy fats include omega 3s found in fish, walnuts, flax, soybeans.
.
6️⃣ Identify and treat health problems💉: It’s not just dementia or Alzheimer’s disease that causes memory loss. There are many diseases (diabetes, thyroid), mental health disorders, and medications (sleep aids, antidepressants, cold/cough meds) that can interfere with memory.
.
7️⃣Pay attention👨🏻‍🏫: If you’re constantly distracted by a million things ( texts, email, push notifications) you’ll never be able to focus and process information properly. When you’re reading or learning something put your phone elsewhere, turn the tv off and just focus.. Happy GALentines day👩‍❤️‍💋‍👩!!!! For those of you that aren’t aware today is Galentine’s day and it’s AWESOME. It was originated by the character Leslie Knope from the show Parks and Recreation and it’s become a mainstream celebration.
.
Let me explain why it’s important to cherish this day...
Several people feel this sense of urgency to find someone to spend Valentine’s Day with, but #galentinesday allows you to cherish the friends you already have in your life. Basically, it's like Valentine's Day, only instead of celebrating the love you have for your significant other, you spend it with your best girlfriends, who are, after all, your soul mates, and therefore deserve a holiday all to themselves, too. I don’t know about you but I find the most relaxing escape is a night out with my girls.
Tag your bestie below in honor of GALentines day💘 No box of chocolates 🍫 and no over the top dinner 🥩🍤for me this Valentines.
.
I’m over holidays being an excuse to overindulge. Integrating health and fitness into your valentines shakes things up a bit and makes it way more fun and interesting. Here are some ideas you can do with your significant other or with your gal pals (hellooo galentines)...
.
⛸Go ice skating:
Since it’s super cold in most parts of the country, why not take advantage of the frigid temps and use one of nature’s best wintery gifts: ice! Ice skating is a great low-impact workout (assuming you’re skipping the intense jumps). Just make sure to take the right steps to safely exercise in the cold.
🧗🏼‍♀️Take a hike:
Getting some fresh air with a nice daytime hike is a great way to spend some quality time with your S.O. while getting in a good workout. Plus, walking regularly can help lower blood pressure, manage weight, improve mood, and reduce risk for type-2 diabetes. Studies have also linked being outdoors and in nature to boost energy.
🚴🏼‍♀️Go for a bike ride:
No better way to celebrate V-Day than a scenic bike ride! Head to a local park or scenic district for a leisurely ride, then grab a Valentine’s-friendly treat afterwards.🧘🏼‍♀️🧘🏽‍♂️Get Zen at an evening yoga class:
A couple that stretches together, stays together? Research suggests that frequent yoga practice can lead to improved mood and satisfaction with life, and many studies also point to yoga’s many physical benefits (including strength, flexibility, and respiratory and cardiovascular function).
.
Since V-day is all about your heart ❤️why not take care of it with these fun activities. Any other fun valentine ideas comment below! How sweet it is to be loved by you💕!!!
.
I once read somewhere that the single most important decision you can make in life is who you decide to marry💍. My husband is my biggest fan and supporter. He values my career and pulls his weight at home so I don’t have to juggle everything.
.
Research agrees that who you marry can significantly affect your level of success. Significant others can help you thrive by embracing life opportunities.
.
Studies have also shown having a good marriage makes you less likely to suffer from heart disease and depression.
.
One of my most popular blog post features my favorite family marriage therapist @playavistacounseling discussing how to stay madly in love with your partner. 🔗link in profile. Sometimes the littlest things take up the most room in your heart💕...I’ll be enjoying hearts and all things pink with my lil girls... #tgif
